Our Approach to Parent Coaching
We provide parents with a judgement-free space to feel more effective and empowered in their approach to parenting. We are here to help you better understand how your child or teenager’s developmental state may be impacting their behaviors. Parent coaching will provide you with strengths-based, attachment-driven strategies to lovingly set limits with your child or teenager, while increasing your attunement to their emotional needs. Additionally, parent coaching provides you with the space to process your own experiences of parenting, and learn how to increase your self-care in order to allow your child or teenager to borrow your calm during tantrums and meltdowns.
During your complimentary phone consultation, we can answer any questions you may have, and see if we’re a good fit for child therapy.
After we’ve established we are a good fit, your therapist will send you paperwork and schedule an initial intake appointment to gather information and collaborate with you to identify treatment goals. From there, we will begin your parent coaching.
Once parent coaching begins, you can expect that our meetings will be filled with compassion and understanding, where you can share your parenting experiences completely unfiltered. We will identify challenges and work together to practice skills to help you meet your parenting goals.
If you have any other questions about what parent coaching might look like for you, please reach out! We are happy to help.
FAQs
How long does parent coaching last?
There is no set amount of time that parent coaching lasts. The amount of time that parent coaching will take depends on your goals and your specific challenges. Short term parent coaching may be 6-8 sessions, while long term parent coaching may be 12-18 weeks.
Can my spouse/partner be involved?
Yes! It is important that all relevant caregivers be involved in parent coaching to some degree. If a spouse/partner/caregiver would like to be more heavily involved and this aligns with your treatment goals, they may attend every session. Other spouses/partners/caregivers may only wish to attend sessions in which specific skills are taught in order to practice on their own. Their involvement will depend on your specific needs and goals.
Will my child be attending sessions with me?
Your child’s involvement in sessions will depend on the goals you formulate at the onset of coaching. If you are looking for your personal space to process and understand your child’s behavior, you will likely attend sessions alone and/or with your spouse/caregiver.
If you are looking for more intensive parent coaching, I do offer Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT involves parent and child attending each session to provide parents with hands-on coaching with their child present.
Additionally, once you intake session is completed, it may be determined that you child may benefit from additional therapeutic support. Click here to learn more.
